About Stephen

Stephen Cook - Biography

Born 1965 in London

Moved to Wiltshire in 1970

From 1981-83 I studied at the London College of Furniture in the Commercial Road, EC1 ,formally Shoreditch Technical College ,which was the trade woodwork training school.

I then started working for the  family furniture restoration business based in Fulham. This is where my education really started. I was hands on, working with experienced craftsmen who had practical knowledge, which was handed on rather than taught!

After 5 years in London I then relocated the workshops back down to Marlborough although there was a workshop presence kept on in Town.

In 1988 the retail company started due to the volume of buying, restoring and selling being undertaken by the restoration company. This was a natural progression as my brother Billy had been working for Christies and was the natural choice to be the face of our retail arm. This is still run on a daily basis by Billy.

As the market developed we found ourselves traveling to the other side of the pond and exhibiting at various shows around America with William Cook Antiques.

Whilst traveling to different locations and being exposed to all manner of fine art ,antiques and oddities I have had an amazing opportunity to obtain, again, a hands on, shop floor learning experience.

As a result of being part of a well known and established business and my father being acknowledged as an authority on furniture restoration we had access  to some of the best private English furniture collections in the world.

Having been brought up in an environment surrounded by good design and form an appreciation was not so much learnt but absorbed.

As an on going development and progression an appreciation of good art and design never stops but evolves and as such quality is quality whether it be 300 years old or recently produced.

As a result of this the opportunity to open a gallery specifically focused on contemporary art and design has arisen .What for me is the icing on the cake is that I get to work with my younger brother Justin , who brings his individual life experience’s to the mix along with Richard who I work alongside in the restoration company.

I look forward to meeting you in the future and enthusing a little more !
